Wellness
//What is Wellness?
Well it's really a fancy way of considering your health in every area.
Wellness is more than diet and exercise. Wellness includes social, occupational, environmental, financial, intellectual and spiritual factors.
Wellness is largely about wisdom.
We make choices about wellness everyday and the effects accumulate.
If you have IBS, eczema, psoriasis or similar chronic frustrations you know exactly what I mean. The choices you make today affect your wellness later.
This sounds like something you would say to your teenager..but take your own advice..make wise choices.
//Balance.
Add up the hours you work sleep and play, Now add the hours you spend on responsibilities out of these three categories.
In middle age you are often more time poor than you realise. Your kids left home? Often people fill up the gaps a bit too much. Elderly relatives, grown children, grandchildren and long standing helping roles can subtly edge into the time you need to invest in being well. You are slowly changing and need a little more rest and a little more play than you ever did before. Own it. Do it.
If you come home exhausted and crash in front of the TV every night..wrong!
This is a red flashing light that you are loosing the balance of wellness.
Have a look at those hours..what can you say no too!
Then take an evening or regular weekend for yourself..
Book club, exercise, group activities of all sorts. City walks...etc..
Rest and fun makes Grandma much nicer, much more helpful and well!
// Other issues
There are many things that may need addressing in the context of wellness. As a health proffesional of many years I have been taught to look for "Yellow Flags" which are signs that a patient may need help beyond my area. When people address the issues of mental and social health their physical condition becomes much easier to deal with.
